It looks like the nose importer has changed quite a bit, so I thought it might no longer experience the issue. I tried renaming my home directory back to lowercase, but was not able to reproduce the issue. Apparently the renaming fixed the cached value being used for getcwd.

Also, when I was experiencing the issue, I wonder if this might have fixed it:

--first-package-wins, --first-pkg-wins, --1st-pkg-wins

nose's importer will normally evict a package from sys.modules if
it sees a package with the same name in a different location. Set
this option to disable that behavior.
