Another thing worth noting in the writeup about stages:

A file that has been modified and staged for commit can be modified again, and this change won't be committed.

I too was struggling for the exact same reason: Subversion didn't require learning, Mercurial didn't require learning, but git did and everyone was being a condenscending prick.

It wasn't until this summer after I attended Michael Schwern's amazing "Git for Ages Four and Up", where he explains how he learned git: With the help of tinker toys!
